Miami Breaks up with Spring Break
Breakups are tough, especially when they leave you feeling blindsided or worse…questioning if the love was ever there at all. That gut wrenching heartbreak is what significant amounts of spring breakers felt last week when the city of Miami announced that they were “breaking up with spring break.” The campaign dropped last week to announce increased restrictions for spring breakers to detract high volumes of partygoers from over-indulging famous beaches, which is what happened in 2023 when things got so bad they had to declare a state of emergency. The city announced new policies for 2024 including curfews, increased DUI checkpoints, $100 parking, and more in their minute-long video campaign.

The campaign has made a totally controlled splash on social media, reaching over 96 million feeds in the past week. Responses to the campaign have been split between those reacting positively (“they want us to be safe”) and those that have less favorable responses (“I don’t give a f*#& about a curfew, IM GOING”).

The discussion topics that emerged are primarily linked to college and money. This points to the increased cost of traveling to Miami in terms of monetary value and increased risk of legal concerns for college students due to these impending changes.

Top used emojiis include the laughing face, which raises the question of whether or not people are laughing with the city of Miami or at them…

It will certainly be interesting to see how this breakup plays out for Miami and its spring breakers. If you believe that one’s romantic exes tend to come back around, then perhaps spring break party people will need to seek a bit more closure before they can truly move on.
